First, what to check
- According to the CDC, complication risk depends on your health, the facility, and your destination.
- Abroad, clinics may have weaker infection control, which raises the chance of drug-resistant infections.
- Follow-up care in the US can cost a lot if problems develop after you return.
- Language barriers between you and clinic staff can cause misunderstandings about your treatment.
- Sterile instruments and safe water aren't standard everywhere, the ADA's MouthHealthy warns.
- After surgical dental work, healing can take months, and you may need follow-up visits.
- Make sure your insurer will cover follow-up treatment after you return to the US.
- The AGD advises you to request your treatment records after care abroad. This lets your home dentist follow up.
- Colgate notes that practices abroad may have widely different standards, including for infection control.
